Open Mic Lowdown - Creation Tuesday - Providence, RI - The Spot on Thayer

Providence has something every city needs and deserves, an open arts and music project. Chock full of
imagination and talent, Creation:Tuesday at The Spot on Thayer is a unique open mic event -not only
featuring live jams but painters, dancers, film makers and artists of all kinds. Josh Willis (Artistic Director),
Josh Fulford (Technical Director), Spogga (Musical Director), Keven Blanchette (Director of Operations) and
Nick Cardi (Gallery Director)are the masterminds behind Creation:Tuesday.

The idea for the evening started a little over a year ago when two mutual friends went on their honeymoon.
“We had all been talking about the concept for some time. A night for [artists] to come together, perform,
create, brainstorm, network and enjoy themselves. I thought it would be wonderful for the Fulfords to come
home to this active project. I made a flyer and sent out Facebook, Myspace and email invites. Some very
talented musicians came by to jam. Even more came the next week. Within a month or two we had a
dedicated following. By 6 months we were reaching capacity, often,” writes Willis. “I could not be happier with
the way Creation:Tuesday has grown, nor more ‘non-condescendingly’ proud of every single person who has
given a piece of themselves to build the foundation of this event, this project and this family.”

Fulford records the jams every week and then gives the musicians copies of the recording the following week
and posts some tracks on the Creation:Tuesday myspace page. How dreamy is that? “Every week something
new and beautiful happens completely unrehearsed, this is why is so magical,” writes Fulford.

“Most of the time you'll see a makeshift band of players that come around often-- some playing together for
the first time, some band members developing their skills by playing with others. The jams get hot,” writes
Cardi. “We generally show over twenty artists at a time and over one-hundred pieces. We have quite the
collection of varied talents. Some are just starting, so they come to take lessons. Some are looking to
develop, some are simply extremely naturally talented.  Many have been doing it all their life.  But, with all the
different disciplines we offer here, it is easy to find something new to learn…You'll never see it done the
same way or with the same group of musicians twice. Sometimes there are 8 people on stage, half of whom
have never played together, but the music is always seamless.”

Rundown: Creation Tuesdays is not your run-of-the-mill open mic. It’s more of an open jam or an “invented”
mic. I thought this idea would appeal to many musicians because of its originality and of course, super
awesomeness. It is advised prospective performers contact the Creation team ahead of time. Any questions
or RSVP's can be addressed to JoshWillis@thespotonthayer.com
